This course will provide principles and methods to give an insight in the effectiveness of a Safety Management System based upon the ISM Code.

Competence management and risk management are a sound basis for a Safety Management System. This course will provide the knowledge and tools for competence management and risk management.

You will receive enhanced understanding of the processes for improvement and verification of the effectiveness of an ISM Code Safety Management System, including audit techniques.

The main obstacles and challenges while working with the ISM Code will be addressed with the involvement of the participants.
Exchange of experiences of the participants will be valuable input during the course.

Managers, Internal Auditors, DPA’s, ship’s senior staff within the shipping and associated companies who are responsible or involved in the ISM Safety Management Systems
Individuals seeking more knowledge of the ISM code requirements and principles and knowledge of Safety Management Systems.

• To be able to assess the effectiveness and improve the level of control of the existing Safety Management System.

• To be able to identify basic/underlying factors and evaluate the corrective and preventive measures in terms of effectiveness and efficiency

• To be able to analyze competencies within the organization and identify gaps and training needs.

CourseAgenda
The course comprises a two-day session covering:

• Safety Management System requirements (short overview, including the pre-amble of the ISM-code)

• Identification of non-conformities, accidents and hazardous situations (including PSC detentions)

• Obstacles in the Safety Management System

• Investigation and analysis (basic principles, methods)

• Corrective actions to avoid recurrence

• Risk Management (basic principle)

• Competence Management (basic principles and methods)

• Monitoring techniques, including auditing, assessments, evaluations, inspections.
