Behaviour Oriented Change :
In recent years an increased focus on behavioural change can be observed. This is understandable when keeping in mind that employees are more and more one of the most valuable assets of an organisation. In order to improve safety, quality and business performance, employers zoom in on the imorovement potential of their employees to investigate their contribution to the organisation's performance improvements. The famous quote "human behaviour is in 80% of all cases the cause of incidents". Initially seems plausible. After all, employees are involved in most accidents ; 'had they acted differently the accident could have been prevented'. However, this passes over the fact that the behaviour of an employee is always influenced by the technology He works with and the organisation he works in. Therefore, behaviour can be regarded as a direct cause for incidents and accidents, but it is influenced by underlying basis causes such as "Risk Competence", defined as the ability of an employee to recognise, asses and act on risks. In reality, this process is to a large extent formalised by procedures and rules. However, these can never cover every possible risk situation and thus risk competence is needed in order to ensure safe working conditions. Risk competence consists of four elements (perception, acceptance, commitment & knowledge, skills) and is being influenced by as well a person’s intrinsic motivation as well as the external motivation dictated by the organisation. DNV can help your organisation as expert guide in this BOC process to achieve an improved safety and overall business performance , while considering the specific characteristics of your company, such culture and risk profile.
