USCG accepts nine ballast water treatment systems as Alternate Management System

The latest US ballast water management legislation has been in force since June 2012. Most vessels are required to treat their ballast water after a certain vessel-specific date in the future. US legislation requires the ballast water treatment system (BWTS) to be type approved by the USCG. Currently, no BWTS has such type approval.

Safety Alert: turbocharger safety warning – NA and NR type turbochargers

MAN Diesel & Turbo SE recently issued Alert Service Bulletin No.ASB2013/02/18, including an addendum, relating to the safety and safe operation of certain specific turbocharger types.

Ballast water included in the revised US Vessel General Permit (VGP)

In the last week of March 2013, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final Vessel General Permit regulating discharges from commercial vessels, including ballast water, to protect the nation’s water from ship-borne pollutants and reduce invasive species in US waters. The VGP will enter into force on 19 December 2013 and replace the current VGP (2008 VGP).
